OpenAI GPT-5.6 launch, Google spam update & more
This week's highlights across Search, Social, PR and AI.
Search
1. Google’s June 2026 spam update is done rolling out
Google has confirmed that its June 2026 spam update, released on June 24th, finished rolling out two days later on June 26th. It’s the second spam update of the year, following March’s, and felt a bit bigger in scope.
If your site wasn’t hit, you should be in the clear for now, though Google always acknowledges that some innocent sites get caught in the crossfire. Worth keeping an eye on rankings over the next week or two if anything looks off.
Social
2. TikTok bets on branded microdramas with Growth Max for Mini Series

TikTok has launched Growth Max for Mini Series, an ad solution built around its new Mini Series feature, which lets brands publish episodic drama content directly on the platform. Series can live in a dedicated Minis Center or run as organic episodic posts in the main feed, with brands earning revenue when users watch ads to unlock additional episodes.
As short-form fatigue sets in, platforms appear to be betting on serialized storytelling as the next lever for keeping people scrolling.
3. Instagram sets its sights on the living room
Instagram is testing longer-form video, episodic series and Live TV formats for its TV app, expanding into Samsung TVs after already being available on Amazon Fire and Google TV. The update also brings curated channels, phone-to-TV casting and support for horizontal video and Stories.

It seems Instagram now sees streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video as competitors, as well as TikTok and YouTube. The platform that started as a square-photo app is steadily becoming a living-room destination.
4. YouTube Shorts borrows even more from TikTok
YouTube has rolled out a fresh batch of TikTok-style updates to Shorts: a “clear screen” mode that hides on-screen clutter, a heart icon replacing the thumbs-up button, and a new 2x playback speed control. The dislike button is also being phased out of the Shorts player in favour of more direct recommendation controls.
It’s the latest in a long line of moves from YouTube, which has been steadily closing the gap with TikTok’s interface since Shorts launched in 2020. Whether copying the look closes the engagement gap remains to be seen.
5. Brands are quietly using AI-generated influencers and not telling anyone
A Guardian investigation has found brands deploying AI-generated influencer personas in social posts designed to look like genuine customer experiences, often with no disclosure that the people on screen aren’t real. Examples included a fashion brand and a photo app, both using synthetic figures in what appeared to be authentic testimonials.
There’s currently no requirement in the UK for brands to disclose AI-generated promotional content. New EU rules landing in August will mandate labelling, but this won’t apply in the UK. Consumer group Which? is calling for clearer rules, and with trust in online content already strained, this is a story likely to keep resurfacing.

6. Reddit's new CMO debuts with a love letter to its humanity
Reddit has launched its first campaign under new CMO Jim Squires, “People Are The Best,” created with Mischief. The work leans into Reddit’s most opinionated communities, framing the platform’s messy, human conversations as a desirable feature rather than a brand safety risk.
It’s a clever pivot at a moment when much of digital media is flattening into bland AI summaries. Reddit is betting that real, unscripted human debate is exactly what makes it valuable to advertisers, instead of something to be sanitised.

7. HBO Max sends a giant dragon over London to launch House of the Dragon

To mark the return of House of the Dragon’s third season, HBO Max flew an eight-metre model of Syrax over the Tower of London. Built by German aeronautics firm Airstage using production scans from the show, the model took three months and nearly 3,000 hours to construct, with 23 moving parts and concealed impellers for lifelike flight.
It’s an old-school stunt executed with impressive technical craft, the kind of large-scale spectacle that’s increasingly rare and increasingly effective precisely because it can’t be faked online.

8. OpenAI launches GPT-5.6 in limited preview, but not without friction
OpenAI has released a limited preview of its GPT-5.6 series, including flagship model Sol, mid-tier Terra and budget-friendly Luna. Sol is OpenAI’s strongest model yet, with agentic gains in coding, biology and cybersecurity, but the Trump administration is restricting its rollout to a small group of trusted partners while a government review process is worked out.
OpenAI pushed back publicly on the arrangement, warning that government access reviews shouldn’t become the default gatekeeping mechanism for new model releases.
9. Anthropic brings Claude into Slack as a tagged coworker
Anthropic has launched Claude Tag, letting teams tag @Claude directly inside Slack channels and assign it ongoing work. The assistant can use memory, scheduled tasks and tool access to keep working on tasks well after the original prompt, and Anthropic says 65% of its own product team’s code is already written by its internal version of the tool.
It’s currently in beta for Claude Enterprise and Team customers, with plans to expand beyond Slack.
10. Getty Images strikes a display partnership with OpenAI
Getty Images announced it has signed a multi-year deal to bring its licensed content into search and discovery experiences within ChatGPT.
The agreement follows a similar partnership Getty struck with Perplexity last year, suggesting a broader pattern of AI platforms licensing premium visual content rather than relying solely on scraped or generated imagery.
11. ByteDance unveils Seedance 2.5, a 30-second AI video model
ByteDance has introduced Seedance 2.5, a video model capable of generating a single continuous 30-second clip in 4K from one prompt, without stitching together shorter segments. It accepts up to 50 multimodal reference inputs, far more than rivals like Google’s Veo, giving creators much finer control over style and continuity.
The model is in enterprise beta now, with a public launch speculated for early July. It arrives months after ByteDance’s previous model drew cease-and-desist letters from major Hollywood studios, so how it handles IP concerns at scale will be worth watching.
That’s all for this week. See you next Wednesday morning for another round-up of the best and biggest stories from across the Search-Verse™.
